History of the FSC System

The Sisters of St. Francis of Sylvania, Ohio, have been involved in healthcare throughout their history. As the ministry grew, the need to provide consistent, professional oversight became a necessity. In 1984, drawing on the expertise of local lay representatives from governance and administration, internal and external consultants and congregation members, Franciscan Services Corporation was established.

The FSC System corporate structure, based on a “holding company” model, has continued to focus on the following: assurance of the effectiveness of the ministry and validation for the rationale for sponsorship; the provision of governance, leadership and direction to sponsored organizations; and the identification of sponsorship growth opportunities.

In the 1980s, FSC worked to develop itself and the partnership as a System of organizations. In the early 1990s, the core values of Reverence, Service and Stewardship were adopted as the guiding principles throughout the System and an eldercare component was added to its healthcare ministry.

Celebrating its 20th Anniversary in 2004, FSC has evolved into a System of Regional Systems and has formulated its Strategic Plan to address ever-changing needs and opportunities for the Sisters' health and human services ministry.
