St. Francis and the Wolf of Gubbio
St. Francis and the Wolf of Gubbio

St. Francis of Assisi – Patron Saint

St. Francis of Assisi (1181 or 1182-1226), the eldest son of a rich cloth merchant and a devout French mother, was born in a small town in the Umbrian Hills of Italy. Francis Berndone’s youth was spent in relative luxury. As a youth, he was charming and charismatic, exhibiting good humor and a prodigal generosity of a wealthy, spoiled man. It was his dream to become a knight. Francis entered one of the local wars, so frequent at that time between rival cities, and was taken prisoner. After a year his mother, who was the loving influence in his life, secured his release. It was four more years before Francis experienced a powerful spiritual awakening and dedicated himself to the service of God. Francis chose to renounce his wealth and lead a life of penance, ministering to the poor and promoting peace. In a short time, he attracted many followers and his Gospel way of life flourished in many countries. Francis’ life and work were the beginning of a movement that continues to the present day. Contemporary followers of St. Francis number 1.2 million persons worldwide. In the spirit of St. Francis, the Little Poor Man of Assisi, they continue his good work—caring for the earth, ministering to the poor and outcasts, preaching peace through reconciliation and the promotion of wholeness of mind, body and spirit. St. Francis of Assisi, our Patron Saint, was canonized in 1228. His feast is celebrated worldwide on the 4th of October.
